The course will roughly follow the book
Abstract algebra : A first course by Dan Saracino. A secondary reference is the book by Dummit and Foote. You are not required to buy any textbook but you may find it useful to have one on hand. As the course is online for York students all lecture notes will be posted online. I may even post recorded screencasts of the lectures online.
The basic notions of group theory will be presented in this course. Key topics that we will discuss are the isomorphism theorems, the class equation and the Sylow theorems.
The course will run jointly with Bishop's and MUN at cornerbrook. Physical lectures will take place at Western university. They will be broadcast over the internet so that students can attend via teleconferencing. We will make use of google hangouts to do this. There is a url posted in the course site at owl.uwo.ca that can be used to access the hangout.
