Additional references: P. Samuel's Algebraic theory of numbers and J. Neukirch's Algebraic Number Theory (Chapters I-II).

Prerequisites: Mathematics 4120A/B Field theory.

Course outline: The goal of the course is to cover the following basic topics: rings of algebraic integers, Dedekind rings, class groups, the two finiteness theorems: finiteness of class numbers and Dirichlet's theorem on units, cyclotomic fields, the first case of Fermat's last theorem. Other topics will be included if time permits.
