No required text. The following will be references:
Dummit and Foote: Abstract Algebra, Third Edition
Atiyah and Macdonald: Commutative Algebra
Eisenbud: Commutative Algebra: with a View Toward Algebraic Geometry
Prerequisites: Math 4123/9023A/B or equivalent.

Course outline:

Tensor products, Localisation, Primary Decomposition, Integral Dependence and Valuations, Chain Conditions, Noetherian and Artin rings, Discrete Valuation Rings and Dedekind Domains, Completions, Dimension Theory plus additional topics if time permits

Evaluation of Student Performance:

Assignments: 60%
Participation:  10%
Presentation + Written report: 30%

There will be 5 or 6 assignments. They are due at the beginning of class. Click here for a list of exercises and the procedures for handing in homework. The lowest (or missing) assignment grade will be dropped when computing the course grade.

The assignments are to be thought of as take-home exams and should be done entirely on your own. All those involved in copying will receive a negative grade on the assignment in question. In addition, all academic offenses will be reported to the Dean's office, and may result in further penalties.
