### Mathematics 2155F: Discrete Mathematics I

Fall 2015
• Instructor: Section 001 (MWF 2:30-3:30), MC 105B: S. Rankin, Middlesex College 132.

• Office hours policy: drop in any time after 12:30pm except of course MWF 2:30-3:30. Email is also a good way to communicate with me, either to discuss a problem or to make an appointment if you wish to do so.
• Course Outline.
• List of Recommended Exercises.
• The final exam has now been scheduled for Friday, December 11, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm in Health Sciences Building Room 35.

• Bulletin Board

• Here are the solutions to the final exam.
• Here are the solutions for Assignment 10.
• Here are the solutions for Assignment 9.
• Here are the solutions for Assignment 8.
• Information about the 2016 USRA.
• Here are the solutions for Assignment 7.
• Here are the solutions for Assignment 6.
• Here are the solutions to the midterm exam.
• Here is the 2014 midterm exam for your perusal, and here are its solutions. Please note that you should not think that this year's midterm will be similar to the 2014 midterm; you should simply treat this as another list of problems for you to try.
• Here are the solutions for Assignment 5.
• Here are the solutions to Assignment 4.
• Here are the solutions to Assignment 3.
• Here is a proof of the well ordering principle that corrects some typos in the text (there will several occurrences of $n^+$ that should have been $n$).
• Here are the solutions for Assignment 2.
• Here are the solutions for the first assignment.
• Mathematics 2155F is an introduction to the fundamental concepts necessary for the study of mathematics. The course focusses initially on the notion of proof and elementary reasoning, then proceeds to the discussion of the fundamental mathematical concepts. The course is an interesting blend of abstract mathematical ideals and concrete computation (although perhaps the computations will not be those you are already acquainted with from your earlier mathematical studies). Weekly assignments will allow you to receive regular feedback on your progress in mastering the ideas and the computations.
• There is a new edition of the text (the 6th edition) that will be in the bookstore by September 10. There is also a solution manual that should be in the book store by September 14 (if not before). The solution manual contains the solutions to every recommended exercise, and as well, contains the midterm and final exams, with solutions, for 2012, 2013, and 2014.
